Celebrating 20 Years of Community Broadband

Cedar Falls Utilities is celebrating 20 years as a broadband provider. We got our start when customers recognized a need and didn’t want to wait for the companies then serving the town to upgrade their networks. They passed a referendum that founded the Communications Utility and tasked CFU with designing, building and running our community broadband service.

We connected our first internet customers in 1996. While many things have changed about how customers use the internet in 20 years, CFU has continued to deliver the promised benefits of municipal broadband to Cedar Falls homes and businesses.

Early Deployment
CFU launched city-wide service four years before any private broadband provider. CFU services met an emerging need for local businesses and provided high-speed residential internet access much earlier than in other communities.

Leading Edge Infrastructure
Because so many customers choose our service, CFU can continually reinvest in the network. From 2010 to 2013, the entire community-wide network was upgraded to fiber-to-the-premises. Benefits of the fiber network include superior internet reliability and speed.

New Services To Meet Community Needs
CFU continues to expand services based upon community needs. In 2013 we brought broadband to our rural electric service area. This year we launched telephone service to meet customer demand.

Competitive Prices
Residential customers save about $4 million per year in broadband and TV service costs compared with peer communities.

Prompt and Responsive Local Service
Competing internet and TV providers may take several days to connect services or fix problems. CFU’s local crews can schedule installations quickly and are on call 24 hours per day to keep customers in service.
