As part of its commitment to providing Cedar Falls residents with quality water, Cedar Falls Utilities flushes hydrants to remove built-up minerals in water mains. When a nearby hydrant is being flushed, water to area homes may be temporarily discolored. This brownish-colored water is bacterially safe but CFU suggests customers avoid doing laundry on these flushing days if possible. If clothes are washed in discolored water, keep them wet and call CFU at 268-5332 to get a special detergent at no charge.
At certain times of the year, CFU will be flushing hydrants Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. until the whole system is flushed. When flushing hydrants, we will post a map in the news items showing areas where the week's flushing may result in discoloration (caution areas). Once an area is marked blue, flushing is complete and there should be no other issues. We will update the map on Fridays to show the progress and plans for the coming week.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Questions? Please call us at 268-5332.
