CFU TV Service Ending October 2026
Cedar Falls Utilities will stop offering cable TV late next year. This was a difficult decision, and we recognize this may be an adjustment for some of our customers. We would like to explain why this change is happening and support you in making a smooth transition to another TV option.
Why We're Making This Change
The cable television landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. With the rise of streaming services and on demand platforms, many of the most popular shows and games are not available on cable TV. CFU is unable to provide the same quality TV programming you have previously enjoyed.
More customers have chosen flexible, internet-based entertainment options over traditional cable TV. Large, national streaming services have technological advantages that CFU will not be able to match. For example, streaming services like YouTube TV let you watch shows outside of your home, a feature CFU TV and other traditional cable providers are restricted from offering.
At the same time, the cost of CFU cable TV has continued to increase, driven by rising content fees and complex agreements with network owners. We can no longer provide a TV service at a price that is reasonable or provides value for our customers. Many of our customers have already made the switch to streaming TV.
CFU TV customers with Basic Plus and a DVR will save more than $40 per month by switching to a live TV streaming service like YouTube TV.
What This Means for You
- Your internet service will not change. In fact, we’re continuing to invest in and upgrade our all-fiber network to deliver world-class internet to our community. We will continue to provide you with highly reliable and affordable internet service to support your streaming TV choice.
- Your cable TV service will end October 11, 2026. We want to give you plenty of time to switch to a new TV provider. You can choose to drop CFU TV service at any time. Please call us at 319-268-5400 when you are ready to cancel your TV service. If you have set-top boxes, they can be returned for recycling at our office on 1 Utility Parkway.
- We want to make this transition as smooth as possible for you. When you cancel CFU TV service but keep (or add) CFU internet service in 2025 you’ll receive an internet discount of $27.50 per month for three months. That means our most popular internet tier, FiberHome, will cost just $30 per month for three months. Please note: This offer is not available for FiberBasic customers.
- Due to the rapidly rising cost of delivering TV service, we expect to implement a Basic TV rate increase of $17 on January 1, 2026 for remaining TV customers. CFU's WatchTVEverywhere service (streaming on network apps) will also end on January 1.
- You have many great TV options. Many streaming platforms now offer live TV, sports and on-demand content at a significantly lower cost than traditional cable TV. The provider we recommend is YouTube TV, which offers a wide range of channels, a user-friendly interface and features like unlimited cloud DVR storage. To help make your transition easier, we’ve compiled more information about streaming services, including how to get started and tips for streaming on your current devices in Resource Center.
- As an alternative to streaming, some TV viewers only interested in local channels are choosing digital antennas as an inexpensive option.
