The type of furnace filter you choose can affect the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. Some newer style 1-inch pleated filters, advertised as effective against allergies or dust, can actually be too restrictive. This can negatively impact the efficiency of your HVAC system.
If you don’t need the extra filtration, stick with a simple, inexpensive 1-inch filter. If you need the allergy filtration, you can have your system retrofitted to accept a thicker 4 or 5-inch filter. The thicker filters are designed to remove more particles and will let the proper amount of air move through your system. Typically, this retrofit costs $200-$300.
