CFU updates infrastructure like gas mains

Cedar Falls Utilities updates infrastructure and installs services as our community grows to ensure all of our customers receive safe and reliable utility services.

A large project this year that will involve the electric, gas, water and communications utilities is the City roundabout project at the intersection of Greenhill Road and South Main Street.

Power lines and fiber need to be moved underground to make way for the project. Approximately 6,300 feet of conduit for power lines and 4,300 feet of conduit for fiber will be installed this summer.

Moving lines underground reduces exposure to weather and animals that may cause damage and improves reliability.

Gas and Water crews will also move a gas regulator station and 750 feet of gas main later this year to make way for the new roundabout.

Crews are currently working on relocating 5,300 feet of gas main ahead of reconstruction on Cedar Heights Road.

Work continues at the Union Road substation where a new transformer was placed in 2020. Two circuits will be connected to the newly installed transformer to provide additional electric feeds. The two circuits, one of which will be completely underground, will help maintain reliability and give us flexibility should an outage occur.

The Communications Utility continues work on the four-year project to update infrastructure used to deliver internet, TV and phone services across the community. This project will enable CFU to deliver next generation internet and TV service.

In addition to these large projects, crews update infrastructure on a smaller scale throughout the community and bring services to new residential developments and businesses.
