What to Do if You Smell Gas

Posted on Saturday, May 28, 2016

Digging accidents are the number one cause of gas leaks in Cedar Falls, and most of them happen during the summer construction season.

Leaking gas smells like sulfur or rotten eggs. This odor is added to the gas supply on purpose, to make leaks easy to detect. Outdoors you may also notice a hissing sound or bubbling on the surface if an underground gas line has been cut.

Here’s what to do if you smell gas:

  • don’t use light switches
  • leave the area immediately
  • then call CFU at this number:

319-268-5340

ALWAYS report a gas odor by phone. Gas outages cannot be reported online or with the CFU2GO app.

Remember to call 811 to have underground services marked before digging in your yard.
