About the Communications UtilityCedar Falls voters approved formation of Iowa’s first Municipal Communications Utility in 1994. CFU built a city-wide, 750 mghz hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) system and launched cable television service in January 1996. CFU CyberNet high-speed Internet service for homes and businesses was launched in January 1997. In June 2010, the Board of Trustees approved the construction of a city-wide re-build of the HFC system using fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) to bring superior speed and reliability to the entire community of Cedar Falls by 2012. The Utility serves more than 450 Cedar Falls businesses with point-to-point and Internet connections with capacity from up to 100 megabits per second (mbps). Gigabit Ethernet service is also available. CFU’s most popular residential Internet service offers 8 mbps of download capacity and serves more than 9,900 households. CFU cable television offers a full range of high definition and standard definition programming and serves more than 11,500 homes, apartments, businesses and hospitality properties. More Information
