For your safety,
keep gas meters clear of snow and ice
Gas meters covered with ice or buried in snow hamper the work of meter readers and can create a safety hazard at homes and businesses.
CFU meter readers have found many meters completely buried in snow this winter. We ask that customers clear snow away from meters so that our staff members can read them accurately and on schedule so your bill is calculated correctly each month. Please keep the path to your meter accessible as well.
When temperatures warm enough melt snow, be aware of the hazard presented by ice build-up around natural gas meters.
A gas service regulator located on the piping ahead of the meter controls the gas pressure within a building. During a thaw, roof run-off dripping onto meter piping can cause ice to form around the regulator, creating a serious safety hazard.
If the gas regulator is frozen in the open position, excess gas pressure will build up inside the building. If it’s frozen in the closed position, gas pressure will drop and furnaces may not work properly.
Some gas meters are particularly prone to icing, due to their location or inadequate eaves troughs on the building. If icicles often form above your gas meter, we suggest installing a plastic shield to keep roof melt away from the meter and gas piping. Call Gas Services at 268-5340 for solutions.
Thank you for your cooperation this winter! We appreciate your assistance to continue providing safe gas supply to keep your homes and businesses warm.
