Starting the week of January 16, CFU's flood wall construction project is going to get noisy during daylight hours on weekdays.
Project contractor Peterson Construction will be driving steel pilings for the flood wall along the north bank of Dry Run Creek, starting SE of Streeter Station and heading west toward Waterloo Road. The H-shaped steel pilings are being used instead of concrete foundations to withstand the forces of flood water along the river bank. This part of the flood wall construction will be noisy, and we regret that it may be noticeable at neighboring properties. The contractor will use a large crane-mounted diesel pile driver during daylight hours for the next several weeks.
Background: CFU facilities suffered approximately $20 million of flood damage in 2008. Last year CFU received FEMA approval for modifications and extensions to the concrete floodwall around the CFU building complex on Utility Parkway.
The flood wall project received approvals from FEMA, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers. AECOM Engineers prepared the plans and specifications. Peterson Contractors Inc. of Reinbeck was awarded the construction contract through the public bidding process.
Beginning last July, the floodwall has been extended, strengthened, and raised from a height of 864 MSL to 868 MSL. The completed walls now run from 9th Street to an area SE of the Streeter Station Power Plant. New concrete foundations and walls continue to be poured extending south towards Dry Run Creek.
