How to Read Your Meter

Meter Reading Tips

A typical electric or gas meter has four or five dials which are read from left to right and should be recorded in that order. When reading your meters, always record the lower of the two numbers. Keep in mind that every other dial runs counterclockwise (like the first and third dials below).

Meter Tips

So, when the pointer is between the 9 and the 0, you will always record the 9. If the pointer is between the 0 and the 1, you will always use 0. In this example, you would record a 7 for the first dial, a 9 for the second dial, a 4 for the third dial, and a 2 for the last dial. The correct meter reading in this example is 7942.

You read a water meter like the odometer in an automobile.
