What's the difference between HD-capable and HD-ready TVs?

An HD-capable TV has a built-in HD tuner (the tuner is sometimes called a receiver). There are two types of built-in tuners. One type, called an NTSC tuner, receives broadcast digital signals that you pick up over the air using an antenna. The other type, called a QAM tuner, receives digital cable signals. If your HDTV has a built-in QAM tuner, you can use your TV without a converter or set-top box to receive a standard definition digital signal for all of the channels in CFU's Basic and Basic Plus cable services. You will still need either a set-top box or cable card to receive HD cable channels and all channels numbered 100 and up. More on all-digital cable service from CFU.

An HD-ready TV does not have an built-in digital tuner. It is really just a monitor. Connect it to a CFU set-top box or (for compatible TVs) insert a cable card in order to receive cable TV signals. If you want to use this TV with an antenna, you will need an off-air digital converter to receive the broadcast signals.
